Affiliate marketing can be a goldmine for those web site owners that know how to use this powerful tool. By choosing the right affiliates, and marketing their products well, it is possible to realize thousands of dollars in affiliate profits month after month, year after year. The beauty of affiliate marketing is that it allows virtually anyone to make great profits with little risk and little up front cost.

Unlike other forms of internet marketing, affiliate marketing does not require you to create your own products, or to incur inventory or handling costs. Since you are marketing products for others, you have no risk of unsold inventory or other common business woes. As a matter of fact, affiliate marketing is a logical starting point for many new marketers just learning how to use the power of the web effectively. Affiliate marketing can allow them to use other people’s products, efforts, time and resources for their own profit, all the while educating themselves and preparing for greater profits and higher levels of success.

Affiliate marketing is not complicated or difficult, but it is important to follow certain time tested steps and to set up your program the right way. There are several important keys to success in affiliate marketing, and they are the focus of this article.

Key #1 – Determine who your target audience is
In order to gain those large affiliate checks, you will first need to identify who your target audience is, and learn how to market to that special audience.

Catering to your target audience simply means giving them what they want, but many affiliates make the mistake of marketing the wrong products to their customer base.

Key #2 – Pay attention to quality
When you recommend a product, you are putting your reputation on the line. If you recommend inferior products, your reputation, and your business, will suffer as a result. In addition, poor quality products will not generate high commissions, even if the commission rate is very high. In addition, the high rate of returns that poor quality products generate will eat into what commissions you do earn. It is always a good idea to test the products you are going to market before agreeing to the affiliate deal. Testing the products yourself will give you the confidence and credibility to market the products effectively, and allow you to provide a personal testimonial on your web site.

Key #3 – The salesmanship of the site
Before you sign an affiliate agreement with a merchant, be sure to visit their web site and see how they market their own products. If the product is poorly marketed, of the sales copy is poorly written, chances are the product will be a bust.

When visiting a potential affiliate’s web site, always look at it from the perspective of a potential customer. Ask yourself “would I buy that product?”. If the answer to that question is no, chances are you should move on and look for another partner.

Key #4 – Promotional materials
Most affiliate programs give their partners tools to use in their marketing. Using these tools are a great way to save time and effort when marketing products for your affiliate programs. Be sure to ask about the availability of promotional materials when exploring potential affiliate relationships.

Key #5 – How profitable is the promotion?
The last factor, but by no means the least important, is how much commission you will be paid for your sale. A high commission percentage can be a great motivator to focus on one product over another. It is also a good idea to actively seek products that are higher end, and that provide for residual income. This residual income can mean greater profits for your program.
